KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Virginia softball team (1-6) was shut out by fifth-ranked Tennessee 8-0 Friday in the Tennessee Classic.

Fourth-year Lindsey Preuss continued her solid performance at the plate. The La Plata, Md., native broke up the Lady Vol no-hitter with a double to left in the top of the fourth inning. Preuss has tallied at least one hit in six of the team’s seven games this season.

After a three-up three-down first inning, Tennessee put five runs on the board in the second off Virginia starter Karla Wilburn. A walk and an error put runners on second and third with no outs. Erinn Webb singled to bring in both runs and later scored on a three-run shot by Anita Manuma.

Whitney Holstun game on in relief for Wilburn in the second inning and allowed three runs on seven hits while fanning two.

The Lady Vols made it 6-0 in the third. Tiffany Huff hit a two-out single and was brought in by Webb who immediately followed with a double to right center.

Back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth for Tennessee. Two more singles scored runs seven and eight for the Lady Vols, and the game ended in the bottom of the fifth because of the run rule.
