KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Virginia softball team (1-5) notched its first win of the season with a 6-3 win over Louisiana-Monroe (5-6) Friday in the Tennessee Classic at Lee Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. Rookie pitcher Allee Rife went the distance to earn her first collegiate win in the circle. Fourth-year Lindsey Preuss led the Cavaliers at the plate, going 3-for-4 in the contest, including her third home run of the year.

The Cavaliers scored six runs on eight hits and committed two errors in the contest.

Rife went seven innings, allowing three runs, eight hits and walking two.

Virginia got on the board early when Preuss hit a solo shot to right center. The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead after the first inning of play.

After holding Louisiana-Monroe scoreless for the second straight inning, UVa put up five runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Meghan O’Leary, Carly Winger and Preuss hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases. Sarah Tacke popped out for the second out of the inning. A Warhawk error scored O’Leary and the Cavaliers still had the bases loaded. A two-out double to left center from Kelly Haller cleared the bases, and a single from Allee Rife scored Haller. The Cavaliers led 6-0 after three innings of play.

Rife’s shutout lasted five innings, until Louisiana-Monroe tallied three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-3. Brianna Love led off the inning with a home run to left field; the Warhawks scored a trio of runs off four hits in the inning.

Virginia will continue play at the Tennessee Classic against the host Lady Vols (10-1) at 7:30 p.m.
