NEW ORLEANS – The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams were named two of the 2007 NCAA Division I USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams, the association announced today. The Stanford Cardinal were named the Women’s All-Academic Team of the Year after winning every major race they competed in, including their third straight NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country Championships, while the Gaels of Iona College were named the Men’s All-Academic Team of the Year after finishing second at the championships this past November.

The Cavalier men, who compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.11, finished 12th at the championship, the highest finish for the program since 1985. Virginia was led by Jan Foerster and was the highest-finishing ACC squad at the meet. Foerster finished the 10K in 42nd place with an overall time of 30:37. The squad earned an at-large bid into the championships after winning the ACC men’s championship and finishing fourth at the NCAA Southeast Regional.

The women’s team, led by Emily Harrison, combined for a cumulative GPA of 3.287 this year. Harrison, the second ACC athlete to cross the line, finished in the top six of every race that she ran in 2007 and earned an automatic invitation into the NCAA Championships with her runner-up finish at the regional meet.

The ACC women’s teams placed 10 schools on the USTFCAAA All-Academic Team list, while the league was represented on the list by seven of the men’s teams.

For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average.
