CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team plays host to two midweek games this week, as Coppin State and Old Dominion visit Davenport Field on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Game time both days is 4 p.m.

Virginia went 4-0 last weekend against Lehigh, while outscoring the Mountain Hawks 27-4 in the series. The Cavaliers’ starting pitchers (Jacob Thompson, Pat McAnaney, Andrew Carraway, Jeff Lorick) combined to pitch 21 innings and allow just one earned run (0.43 ERA), while the UVa pitching staff as a whole combined for a 0.84 ERA on the weekend.

At the plate, David Adams (Jr., Margate, Fla.) led the team in hitting with a .400 batting average (6-for-15). Adams homered twice against Lehigh in the first game of the Sunday doubleheader, marking UVa’s first two-homer game since Mark Reynolds hit two at Georgia Tech (3/12/04). It also was Virginia’s fourth-ever two home run performance at Davenport Field and the first since Reynolds hit two vs. North Carolina on March 29, 2002.

Coppin State will be competing in its first games of 2008 after its original season opener vs. Hofstra last weekend was postponed because of weather. The Eagles played at Virginia last year, with the Cavaliers earning a 12-0 win.

Old Dominion split its season-opening two-game series with Rutgers at home, losing 7-1 in opener and winning 8-5 in nightcap. The Monarchs were ranked 25th nationally last week in Baseball America rankings before falling out this week. ODU plays at North Carolina Tuesday before coming to Charlottesville. ODU and UVa did not meet last year, and the Cavaliers won the last meeting, 11-10, in Norfolk in 2006.

Virginia wraps up its 10-game homestand with a round robin this weekend with Cornell and Siena. The Big Red and Saints play at noon Friday, with Virginia meeting Siena at 4 p.m. Saturday, Virginia plays Cornell at noon and Siena at 3 p.m., and Sunday Cornell and Siena will meet at 11 a.m., with Virginia playing Cornell at 3 p.m.
