CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 1 Virginia men’s tennis team hosts a top-five showdown Friday as No. 5 Texas visits Charlottesville. The Longhorns are the highest ranked opponent to visit Virginia so far this season.

The match is currently scheduled to be played indoors at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club at 6 p.m. The ITA and NCAA stress that collegiate tennis is an outdoor sport and every attempt to play a match outdoors must be made before moving it indoors. By rule, for a match to be played outdoors, the temperature must be 50 degrees or higher for at least two of the four hours following the scheduled time and no precipitation. As of Wednesday morning, Friday’s forecast calls for a high of 50 degrees with a 50 percent chance of rain. With the chances that Friday’s weather will likely not allow for outdoor play, school officials are still planning for the match to be played indoors at 6 p.m. However, if the forecast for Friday afternoon would improve enough for outdoor play, the match would be played at 2 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (13-0) have been ranked No. 1 in the ITA Rankings each week this season. Two weeks ago, they won the first national championship in ACC men’s tennis history by taking the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle. Texas is 10-1 this season after a 6-1 victory over No. 19 Michigan Tuesday night in Austin. The Longhorns’ only loss came to Georgia in the quarterfinals of National Team Indoors.

On Saturday, the Cavaliers host another top 10 foe, No. 9 Baylor, at 2 p.m. The weather forecast for Saturday is for a high of 54 degrees and a 10 percent chance of rain. A determination about the location of the Baylor match will be made later in the week. Visit VirginiaSports.com for the latest information.
