GREENSBORO, N.C. Virginia’s First Varsity Eight Crew was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Rowing Crew of the Week Tuesday after defeating 10th-ranked Stanford and 13th-ranked UCLA at the PAC-10 Challenge this past weekend in Redwood Shores, Calif.

Virginia, ranked No. 2 nationally, also dropped a close decision to ninth-ranked California.

The Virginia Varsity Eight is Caitlin Mixter (coxswain, Oakton, Va.), Jennifer Cromwell (Bellevue, Wash.), Rebecca Ryall (Auckland, New Zealand), Lauren Hutchins (North Vancouver, Canada), Kelsie Chaudoin (Germantown, Tenn.), Desiree Burns (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Augusta Stratos (Charlottesville, Va.), Bridget Wandelt (Clifton, Va.) and Katrin Sydlik (Schonebeck, Germany).

The Cavaliers defeated 10th-ranked Stanford’s First Varsity Eight in a time of 7:20.51, as the Cardinal recorded a time of 7:31.05 and also defeated 13th-rated UCLA with a time of 6:49.33 to the Bruins’ 7:06.64.

Virginia lost to ninth-ranked California as the Bears recorded a time of 6:51.36, while UVa was three and a half seconds behind in a time of 6:54.86.

The honor is the first for the nationally ranked Cavaliers this year.

The 2008 ACC Women’s Rowing Championships are scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 19 at Lake Hartwell in Clemson.
