CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 3 Virginia rowing team travels to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday for races against No. 9 Ohio State and No. 10 Michigan at Griggs Reservoir. In the morning session beginning at 9 a.m., Virginia will race the Buckeyes, and in the afternoon session beginning at 1 p.m., it will take on the Wolverines.
In action last weekend at the Pac-10 Challenge in Redwood Shores, Calif., the Cavaliers won seven out of nine varsity races against top-ranked California, No. 6 Stanford and No. 18 UCLA. In the first race of the regatta on Saturday, Virginia’s Varsity Eight (Caitlin Mixter coxswain, Jennifer Cromwell, Rebecca Ryall, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Desiree Burns, Augusta Stratos, Bridget Wandelt, Katrin Sydlik) was edged by Cal by less than four seconds (6:51.36 to 6:54.86). The crew rebounded however to defeat Stanford Saturday afternoon (7:41.85 to 7:57.45) and UCLA Sunday morning (6:49.33 to 7:06.64).
For its efforts, UVa’s Varsity Eight was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Crew of the Week.
The Second Varsity Eight, meanwhile, swept its races with California, Stanford and UCLA, and the Varsity Four picked up victories over the Cardinal and Bruins.
In the novice races at the Pac-10 Challenge, Virginia bested UCLA but was edged by California.
