LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. The No. 3-ranked Virginia rowing team wrapped up action at the Virginia Invitational with four victories over Oregon State on Sunday at Lake Monticello. The Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight rowed to wins over the Beavers.

UVa’s Varsity Eight (Coxswain Caitlin Mixter, Jennifer Cromwell, Rebecca Ryall, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Desiree Burns, Augustra Stratos, Bridget Wandelt and Katrin Sydlik), finished with a time of 6:17.8, defeating OSU’s time of 6:26.3. So far this season, the Varsity Eight has lost just one race, to top-ranked California.

“They’re racing well,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I’m looking for them to continue to get better, be challenged and continue doing a good job.”

Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight (Coxswain Mary Eddy, Amanda Chase, Marie Long, Bridget Fowler, Christine Roper, Helen Tompkins, Annie Bohlen, Claudia Blandford, Lauren Shook) also won its race against Oregon State.

The Cavaliers rowed to a first-place finish with a time of 6:34.0, compared to OSU’s time of 6:38.4.

“Today the Second Varsity Eight was challenged to finish with higher quality,” Sauer said. “And I thought they did a good job of that.”

The First Varsity Four (Coxswain Cristine Candland, Susie Chalker, Diane Leigh, Allison Brennan and Victoria Burke) came away with a first-place finish with a time of 7:32.9. In second place was Virginia “B” (Coxswain Taylor Gilmore, Adrienne Egge, Nora Phillips, Shalane Carlson and Summers Nelson) with a time of 7:38.3 and Oregon State finished third with a time of 7:42.0.

The UVa “C” crew (Coxswain Sarah Pichardo, Jessica Streufert, Pamela Baylor, Hannah Jordan, Schafer Bomstein) finished third in the Second Varsity Four race with a time of 7:47.7. First-place honors went to Michigan State “B” in that race, with a time of 7:43.2.

“We have high standards and we’d like to see continued improvement,” associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. “But the pieces are in place for the team to succeed.”

In the novice races, UVa “A” (Coxswain Laura Hendrie, Emily Farrior, Caroline Sweeny, Colleen Beichert, Lauren Heimburg, Ellie Giles, Colleen Bauk, Edidiong Umoh and Jenn Lampen) won its race with a time of 7:07.0, edging Oregon State (7:07.6).

UVa “B” (Coxswain Heba Girgis, Ariane Casper, Hannah Jenkins, Christina O’Neill, Lieve Pitts, Haley Pack, Jingwei Zhu, Natalie Booth and Brittany Moore) came in third in that race with a time of 7:31.5.

“The novices are still figuring out how to tap into their potential,” novices coach Sarah Cannon said. “If and when they find that next gear, their speed will increase dramatically.”

The Cavaliers begin their quest for their ninth-straight ACC Championship next weekend in Clemson, S.C.
