No. 3 Rowing Heads To ACC Championships Looking For Ninth-Straight Crown
Story Links
CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 3-ranked and top-seeded Virginia rowing team heads to Lake Hartwell, S.C., for the 2008 ACC Championship on Saturday. Races begin at 9 a.m., and will be in the following order: Varsity Four, Novice Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Eight.
The Cavaliers are looking for an unprecedented ninth-straight ACC Championship, a feat no other UVa team has accomplished. Virginia’s men’s swimming team won eight-straight conference crowns from 2000-2007.
Led by a Varsity Eight crew that is ranked third nationally with only a close loss to top-ranked California marring its record, the Cavaliers enter this weekend seeded No. 1 in all four events. Virginia’s Varsity Eight coxswain, Caitlin Mixter, enters Saturday’s championship having been named to the All-ACC team in 2006 and 2007, and will be looking to become the first three-time All-ACC selection at her position.
Other ACC teams competing this weekend are: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Miami and North Carolina.
Head coach Kevin Sauer has been at the helm of Virginia in each of its ACC Championship seasons, and his Cavaliers are coming off of another strong showing at the Virginia Invitational, held last weekend at Lake Monticello.
The Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight rowed to wins over Oregon State on the final day of competition.
UVa’s Varsity Eight (Coxswain Caitlin Mixter, Jennifer Cromwell, Rebecca Ryall, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Desiree Burns, Augustra Stratos, Bridget Wandelt and Katrin Sydlik), finished with a time of 6:17.8, defeating OSU’s time of 6:26.3.
Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight (Coxswain Mary Eddy, Amanda Chase, Marie Long, Bridget Fowler, Christine Roper, Helen Tompkins, Annie Bohlen, Claudia Blandford, Lauren Shook) also won its race against Oregon State. The Cavaliers rowed to a first-place finish with a time of 6:34.0, compared to OSU’s time of 6:38.4.
Following Saturday’s races, the conference awards will be announced.
Virginia will be in action following the conference championship on Saturday, April 26, when it travels to Derby, Conn., to race No. 2 Yale and No. 13 Harvard.
