CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia senior right-handed pitcher Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) has been named to the midseason watch list for the 2008 Stopper of the Year Award, presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The award is given to the top relief pitcher in Division I college baseball.

Forty-five relief pitchers are included in the midseason list. Schwimer boasts a 1-1 record, 1.26 ERA and 10 saves this season. He ranks second nationally in saves behind only Southern Miss’ Tyler Conn, who has 12. Schwimer is tied with Joshua Fields of Georgia and Colin Lynch of St. John’s for second nationally.

The Atlantic Coast Conference leads the way with six pitchers on the honor squad. At the conclusion of regular season competition, the NCAA Division I saves leader and four other relief pitching standouts will be selected as the finalists for the award and announced May 28. The winner of the 2008 Stopper of the Year Award will be selected by the NCBWA’s All-America Committee and announced June 4.

Schwimer and the Cavaliers are next in action at 6 p.m. Friday as they play host to Wake Forest in the first of a three-game series.
