Virginia Softball Set to Battle Towson Wednesday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia softball team (14-33, 5-13 ACC) is set to battle Towson (28-20) in a doubleheader Wednesday in Towson, Md. The first game is scheduled for 3 p.m. The non-conference matchup is the final one of the season for the Cavaliers.
Virginia is coming off a series loss on the road at Maryland, in which the Cavaliers lost 6-1 and 2-0 in six innings after winning the first game, 5-4.
Four UVa players are hitting over .300, led by Kelly Haller’s .325 average. Carly Winger hits .311 and leads the Cavaliers with 24 runs scored and 25 RBI on the year. Meghan O’Leary and Lindsey Preuss each hit .305, with O’Leary leading the squad in hits (47) and stolen bases (12).
In the circle, Karla Wilburn has totaled nine wins on the year including two shutouts. Wilburn also has a team-best 45 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings of work.
Towson, meanwhile, is coming off a series loss on the road against Georgia State, dropping two of its three games. Prior to the Georgia State series, the Tigers had won five in a row.
Nina Navarro leads Towson with a .372 batting average, 58 hits and is one of three players tied for the team lead with 27 RBI. Mindy Bean hits .321 and has scored a team-best 34 runs while also ranking second with 45 hits. Aimee Rosa (.310) and Stef Streets (.304) have each brought in 27 runners this season and Rosa leads the Tiger squad with seven home runs on the year.
In the circle, Claire Rietmann-Grout paces the Towson staff with a 2.46 ERA and 122 strikeouts. Shannon Johnston posts a 2.59 ERA while recording 68 strikeouts. Rietmann-Grout is 12-6 on the season while Johnston has a 14-10 mark.
Virginia leads the all-time series with Towson 11-4. Last season the Cavaliers took both games, 5-3 and 4-2, in Charlottesville.
