CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team had four players selected to the 2008 All-ACC lacrosse team, as announced Thursday by the conference office. Senior defender Claire Bordley, sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Duff, senior goalie Kendall McBrearty and junior attacker Ashley McCulloch each earned All-ACC honors for the first time in their careers. Members were chosen through voting by the league’s six head coaches with Maryland leading all schools with five honorees.

Bordley, a native of Vienna, Va., anchors a Cavalier defense that is among the nations best. The senior has collected 28 ground balls, 25 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers to be among the team leaders in each of the categories. She is crucial in Virginia’s transition game and has dished out two assists this year. Prior to the start of the season, Bordley was named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American.

Duff is another player crucial to Virginia’s transition game, as she is a consistent force in clearing the ball and creating fast break opportunities. As the backbone of the midfield, Duff leads the team in ground balls, with 35, and ranks fifth in the conference. In addition, she has won 11 draw controls and caused 17 turnovers. The sophomore from Bethesda, Md., was named to the National All-Rookie squad last year and is one of only two sophomores on this year’s All-ACC squad.

McBrearty, the 2007 ACC-Tournament MVP, has had another solid season in goal for the Cavaliers. The goalkeeper leads the conference and is ranked third nationally in allowing just 6.81 goals against average. The senior also leads the ACC in save percentage (.522) and ranks sixth nationally in the category. She is currently climbing Virginia’s career records, as she sits ninth with 308 career saves.

McCulloch is Virginia’s top playmaker, as she has led the squad in points all season. The junior is currently ranked second in the ACC, and 13th nationally, in assists per game. An Annandale, Va., native, McCulloch is currently a member of Inside Lacrosse’s National Top-10 Player of the Year Watch List.

The 2008 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament began earlier today at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., and will continue through Sunday. The Cavaliers entered the tournament as a second seed and will begin play tomorrow at 3 p.m., versus third-seed Duke. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
