CHARLOTTESVILLE Fresh off its school-record ninth-straight ACC Championship, the No. 3-ranked Virginia rowing team heads to Derby, Conn., for Saturday races against No. 2 Yale and No. 12 Harvard. The races begin at 9 a.m. on the Housatonic River.
Virginia’s unprecedented ninth-straight ACC crown, won last weekend in Clemson, S.C., set a new UVa record for consecutive conference championships. Previously, the men’s swimming team won eight-straight titles from 2000-2007. Head coach Kevin Sauer was named ACC Coach of the Year while the UVa Varsity Eight was named ACC Crew of the Year.
Individually, Virginia coxswain Caitlin Mixter earned her third straight All-ACC Rowing accolade, becoming the first coxswain in ACC history to be named to the All-ACC team three times. She was joined on the all-conference squad by teammates Kelsie Chaudoin, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Wandelt and Augusta Stratos.
The Varsity Eight, composed of Mixter, Chaudoin, Sydlik, Wandelt, Stratos, Rebecca Ryall, Jennifer Cromwell, Lauren Hutchins and Desiree Burns, has defeated every opponent it has faced this year with the exception of No. 1 California on March 29.
Next up for the Cavaliers is South/Central Regionals May 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
