The Department of Athletics plays an important role in the University’s commitment to academic excellence. Student-athletes are expected to perform at a high level in academics as well as athletics. The University of Virginia

Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1819 to “shed light on the public mind.” As one of our founding fathers, Jefferson saw The University as a way to secure the future of a country. In the first year of The University, 1825, it opened doors to 123 students. UVa now offers 51 undergraduate degrees in 47 fields to over 13,000 undergraduate students along with over 7,000 graduate students.

Visiting UVA

Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia and is located 115 miles southwest of Washington D.C. Charlottesville has been ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States in publications such as Forbes, Outside Magazine, Money Magazine, Cities Ranked and Rated, and USA Today. Charlottesville is accessible by car from I-64 or I-66 via Rt. 29. One can get to Charlottesville by air by direct flights into Charlottesville-Albemarle County Airport. Richmond International Airport is also located about an hour outside Charlottesville and Washington Dulles International Airport is located about two hours from campus. An Amtrak station is also located in Charlottesville, which offers daily train into the city.

Compliance

The NCAA has extensive rules on how coaches may recruit prospective student-athletes and UVa is committed to abiding by the rules of the NCAA as well as the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Compliance Department at UVa is designed to provide you with information that will be useful as you make the decision to become a Cavalier student-athlete.
