CHARLOTTESVILLEMac McDonald, the radio “Voice of the Cavaliers,” has resigned his position to pursue other interests. CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, a division of CBS Outdoor and the multi-media rights partner of the University of Virginia, announced McDonald’s resignation.

“Representing Virginia Athletics and being the voice has been a true passion for me” said McDonald. “I now have an opportunity on a couple fronts to move forward in my career and pursue a couple goals that I have had for some time. I will always treasure my time with the players, coaches and administration.”

McDonald has served as the Director of Broadcasting for the Virginia Sports Radio Network and the play-by-play voice for UVa football and men’s basketball since returning to Charlottesville for the 1996 football season. He has also hosted the Cavalier Call-In radio shows with Virginia’s football and men’s basketball head coaches. McDonald also served as the “Voice of the Cavaliers” from 1980-85.

A five-time state sportscaster of the year, McDonald was the radio play-by-play announcer for Wake Forest University for six years before returning to Virginia.

“Mac McDonald’s name has been synonymous with Virginia athletics for many years and he leaves big shoes to fill as the play-by-play ‘Voice of the Cavaliers,’” said Virginia Athletics Director Craig Littlepage. “Mac has been effective in articulating the goals of our athletics department and has provided significant service to the Charlottesville community. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

McDonald’s resignation is effective April 29th.

CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, which operates at Virginia under the name Virginia Sports Properties, will begin a national search for a new director of broadcasting.

“Finding the right talent to serve as the ‘Voice of the Cavaliers’ is the top priority of our staff at Virginia Sports Properties,” said Doug Paschal, Vice President and General Manager of CBS Collegiate Sports Properties. “We are committed to the fans, student-athletes and staff at Virginia, and we will utilize our corporate resources and industry relationships to make the right choice for this important position. We look forward to an exciting 2008-09 season.”

Virginia’s 2008 football season begins on Aug. 30 when the Cavaliers host the Trojans of the University of Southern California.
