CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia softball team (15-37, 6-15 ACC) earned the No. 8 seed at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, set to begin Thursday in Robert E. Taylor Stadium on the Maryland campus. The Cavaliers will play top-seeded North Carolina (49-9-1, 18-2 ACC) at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Official seeds for the ACC Championship were finalized Sunday with the completion of the regular season. The Tar Heels earned the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2000.

Virginia, meanwhile, is the No. 8 seed for the second consecutive year, but increased its conference wins from one to six this season under first-year head coach Eileen Schmidt.

Defending tournament champion Virginia Tech (41-15, 16-5 ACC) is the second seed, while Florida State (36-25, 12-9 ACC), which has won the tournament title 10 times, is seeded third.

The first and second-rounds of the 2008 ACC Softball Championship will take place on Thursday and Friday, respectively, with semifinal matchups on Saturday. The 2008 ACC champion will be determined in Sunday’s final, set for 12 p.m.
