No. 9 Virginia Set To Defend Title At South/Central Regionals

CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 9 Virginia rowing team will compete at the 2008 Aramark South/Central Regional Sprints this weekend on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
On Saturday, May 17, preliminary competition between the 22 participating schools begins. The top four finishers advance to the afternoon semifinals. The finals will be held on Sunday, May 18.
At last year’s South/Central Regional championship, Virginia became the first team in the regional’s history to win every race preliminary, semifinal and final. UVa captured the 2007 overall title with 440 points. The Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four, Open Four and Novice Eight all registered victories.
Since joining the South Region in 2003 (UVa competed in the East Region previously) Virginia has won South Region four times in the last five years (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007). UVa has also won the South/Central team championship three times in the last four seasons (2004, 2005, 2007).
Virginia has been idle since rowing against Yale and Harvard on April 26. Prior to that, the Cavaliers won their school-record ninth-straight ACC Championship on April 19.
