Charlottesville, VA Four members of the Virginia women’s golf team have advanced through local qualifying tournaments in their quest to play at the 2008 U.S. Women’s Open. UVa junior Lene Krog finished first at the tournament held at Lancaster Country Club in Lancaster, Pa. She shot 73. Cavalier freshman Calle Nielson was the runner up at 75 and junior Jennie Arseneault was third at 76. Freshman Eleana Collins, who redshirted the season, was ninth at the qualifier held at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.

All four players will compete in a 36-hole sectional tournament in June. The top players from those events will make up the 156-player field for this year’s U.S. Open scheduled for Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn. June 26-29.

The U.S. Open, which includes both professional and amateur players, was first held in 1953.

In 2007 former Cavalier Leah Wigger qualified for the U.S. Open. In 2006 Arseneault played in the tournament.

The Cavaliers open play at the NCAA Championships Tuesday at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
