High Winds Suspend Play at NCAA Golf Championships

Albuquerque, NM High winds, consistently exceeding 30 to 40 miles per hour, suspended play twice during the second round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships at the University of New Mexico Championship Course. The second suspension, at 4:54 p.m. (MT), ended play for the day. The 12 teams still on the course, including Virginia, will resume play Thursday at 7 a.m. Thunderstorms are forecast for the area in the afternoon.

The Cavaliers, playing in the afternoon group, entered Wednesday’s second round in ninth place after shooting 8-over 296 during the opening 18 holes. Virginia’s players were on the course less than one hour when play was suspended for the first time. After a two-hour delay, tournament officials elected to resume play.

The high winds were evident in the day’s scoring, especially for the teams playing in the afternoon wave.

Virginia, with players completing between six and eight holes, stood at 19-over par for the day and 27-over par for the tournament. Lene Krog (six holes played) and Joy Kim (eight holes), both at 4-over, had UVa’s best scores. Whitney Neuhauser (seven holes) was at 5-over, Jennie Arseneault (seven holes) and Calle Nielson (eight holes) were at 6-over.

Of the 34 holes Virginia’s players completed, the Cavaliers managed just one birdie and 10 pars.

Only 12 teams completed their second rounds. No. 2 USC shot 12-over 300 and is tied with No. 3 UCLA for first place at 8-over 854. The Bruins pulled even with their cross-town rivals thanks to a 7-over 295. No. 9 Denver managed the day’s best score at 6-over 294. The Pioneers have the third best score among teams completing 36 holes at 587. Three-time defending champion Duke shot 300 and stands at 23-over 599.

Auburn, which started the day in second place, shot 27-over 315 to drop 20 shots behind the leaders.
