CHARLOTTESVILLE Fresh off its overall team title at South/Central Regionals, the No. 4 Virginia rowing team heads to the NCAA Championships as one of 12 teams competing.

The championships begin Friday at 11 a.m. (Eastern Time) with heats and qualifying races. Semifinals continue Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and the final races will be Sunday beginning at 12:45 p.m.

Teams competing are Brown, California, Harvard, Michigan State, Ohio State, Princeton, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, Washington State, Wisconsin and Yale.

At last year’s NCAA Championships, Virginia captured the Varsity Four and finished second overall. In the 12-year history of the championships, UVa has participated 11 times and finished as the national runner-up three separate times (2007, 2005, 1999).

Virginia individual boats have been crowned national champions six times (Second Varsity Eight 2005, 1999, 1998; Varsity Four 2007, 2005, 2004).

Virginia’s Varsity Eight (Caitlin Mixter, Jennifer Cromwell, Rebecca Ryall, Lauren Hutchins, Kelsie Chaudoin, Desiree Burns, Augusta Stratos, Bridget Wandelt, Katrin Sydlik) is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation and most recently won at South/Central Regionals.

Virginia’s Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four will also be in search of national titles, having each placed second at the regional races.
