ACC Announces Preseason Men's Soccer Poll

GREENSBORO, N.C. The Virginia men’s soccer team was chosen to finish sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the league announced Wednesday. The Cavaliers return 14 letterwinners and six starters from last year’s team, while head coach George Gelnovatch returns for his 13th season on the sidelines.
The votes were cast by the league’s nine head coaches and Wake Forest, the defending national champion, was picked as the 2008 preseason favorite. Rounding out the top five were Maryland, Boston College, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.
The Cavaliers finished the 2007 campaign with a 12-8-2 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas preseason national rankings, released Tuesday, Virginia received seven votes.
The 2008 season kicks off with two exhibition games Aug. 16 at West Virginia and Aug. 23 against Old Dominion at Klckner Stadium. Both start times are scheduled for 7 p.m.
