BEIJING Virginia volunteer track and field assistant coach Adam Nelson wrapped up competition at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing on Friday in the men’s shot put.

After winning his qualifying round with a throw of 20.56 meters (67 feet, 6 inches), Nelson advanced to the final at the National Stadium. Nelson, the 2004 Athens silver medalist, did not register a mark on any of his throws during the event final.

Tomasz Majewski of Poland won the gold medal. His best throw of 21.51m put him ahead of Christian Cantwell of the United States, whose throw of 21.09m won him the silver, while bronze went to Andrei Mikhnevich of Belarus with a throw of 21.05m.

Nelson told the Associated Press: “I had some big throws and big fouls. Unfortunately they didn’t count. There is not much good to take out of this. I was just throwing down the left sector line and I don’t really do that often.”
