The Cavaliers are coming off a preseason exhibition victory at West Virginia last weekend, defeating the Mountaineers, 2-1. Freshman Tony Tchani and junior Matt Mitchell were UVa’s goal-scorers, while Ross LaBauex tallied an assist.

Virginia returns 14 letterwinners and nine players that tallied points from last year’s squad that finished with a 12-8-2 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. LaBauex scored seven goals last year, the most of any returning Cavalier. He also had four assists in a breakout season for UVa, while Mitchell contributed three goals and an assist.

Other familiar faces back for Virginia include midfielders Neil Barlow (three goals, five assists in 2007), Jonathan Villanueva (two goals, six assists), Matt Poole and T.J. Cyrus. Goalkeepers Michael Giallombardo and Dan Louisignau are expected to compete for the starting nod.

Nine freshmen and three transfers are on the Cavaliers’ roster, the youngest squad since the 1999 season, when UVa also had nine freshmen.

Virginia leads the all-time series with ODU, 15-5-2, in matches dating back to 1971. The teams’ last meeting was in Norfolk, Va., in 2005 a 3-0 Monarchs’ win.
