CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia volleyball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Lee Maes, held its preseason scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium. The Orange team defeated the Blue team 3-2. Game scores were 24-26, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17 and 15-12.

“Our biggest objective was to have a practical application of our training,” Maes said. “We did a lot of good things. The biggest thing we were trying to be conscious of was getting organized with all the lineup changes.

“By playing five games, that gave us a good assessment of who can perform consistently over a long period a time. It was good for us to just get out there and play. We are looking forward to continuing to define roles on our team.”

The Cavaliers open the 2008 campaign at 5 p.m. Friday against Murray State in the JMU Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va.
