CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Virginia head baseball coach Brian O’Connor has announced the hiring of Eddie Smith as volunteer assistant coach. Smith has served as the program’s administrative assistant for the past two seasons.

“As a former student athlete, Eddie Smith understands the commitment our players make to compete at the highest level of college baseball while receiving one of the top educations in the country,” O’Connor said. “Eddie has proven his loyalty and commitment to Virginia Baseball over the last two years in his administrative assistant duties. I am excited about the move Coach Smith will make to be on the field working with our players. Eddie will bring a tireless work ethic and high energy level to our baseball program.”

Smith’s primary duties include the day-to-day development of position players as well as camps and other administrative duties.

A native of Olympia, Wash., Smith played his final two seasons of college baseball at the University of Notre Dame, where he was an infielder on two Big East championship teams and played in two NCAA regionals. He graduated with a degree in Spanish from Notre Dame.

Smith replaces Kyle Werman, who was hired as an assistant coach at George Mason.

O’Connor also announced that former team manager Justin Armistead has taken over the baseball administration position.
