CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Jason Vigilante has announced the addition of Michael Eskind as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers’ track and field program.

A former Wake Forest student-athlete, Eskind returns to the Atlantic Coast Conference after spending the last two years as an assistant track and field coach at Boston University. He was responsible for working with the sprints, vertical jumps, multi-events and throws.

“With the addition of Michael, we get a young coach who’s experienced and enthusiastic,” Vigilante said. “He will bring a great new perspective for each of our field event student-athletes to work with. We’re all delighted to have him with us on Grounds.”

“I am ecstatic to be back in the ACC at the University of Virginia,” Eskind said. “I couldn’t be more excited to work with coach Vigilante, coach (Carrie) Lane and coach (Brad) Hunt. I know that this is a special place and that special things can happen here. I am looking forward to being a part of such a great university and athletics department.”

During Eskind’s time at Boston University, the Terriers’ staff earned America East Indoor and Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year honors. He coached Shani Marks and Amanda Thieschaefer, two of the nation’s top triple jumpers. Marks recently won the US Olympic Trials, while Thieschaefer finished fifth.

Eskind arrived in Boston University in 2006 after serving as a graduate assistant coach for Florida men’s track and field team for three seasons. While in Gainesville, Eskind trained all the field athletes, in addition to monitoring all of the Gators weight room conditioning activities. He also helped identify and recruit potential student-athletes, and aided in administrative duties, including scheduling and meet management and organization.

Prior to taking on coaching duties, Eskind was a four-year letterwinner at Wake Forest, earning All-ACC recognition in 2002 and 2003 for the decathlon. A two-time Dean’s list honoree, Eskind served as team captain in 2003 before earning team MVP honors that spring.

Eskind earned dual bachelor’s degrees at Wake Forest in political science and communication in 2003 before obtaining a master’s degree in exercise and sport sciences at Florida in 2005.
