CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia men’s tennis team continued its strong play at the UVa Fall Invitational Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers shined the most in the two “A” Flights of singles, where Virginia has all four finalists and had six of eight semifinalists.

In the A-1 singles flight, sophomore and second seed Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) will meet first-year Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) for the title on Sunday. Singh recorded a 6-0, 6-4 quarterfinal win over Charles Bottoni of East Tennessee State and followed it up with a straight set win over teammate, first-year David Nguyen (Columbia, Md.) in the semifinals. Courtney reached the final by topping a pair of VCU players Saturday, downing Emil Lindgren in the quarterfinals and Thibaut Charron in the semifinals.

The A-2 singles flight championship will be between No. 2 seed Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and teammate Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Shabaz posted a pair of straight set wins on Saturday, defeating Sebastien Jacques of Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and No. 3 seed, No. 123 ranked Calin Paar of Nebraska 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals. Singer topped Nicolas Delgado, the No. 4 seed, in straight sets in the quarterfinals before advancing to the final when top-seed Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) withdrew from singles play following his three-set quarterfinal win over Njai Stene of Stetson.

In doubles play, Virginia will have two teams playing for flight championships. The No. 1 seed, No. 33 ranked team of Singh and Barrick will meet No. 2 seed, No. 38 ranked Keziel Juneau and Sebastien Vidal of William & Mary in the final. Barrick and Singh scored an 8-3 win over Virginia Tech’s Delgado and Brandon Corace in the semifinals. The team of Nguyen and fellow first-year Resse Milner (Los Angeles, Calif.) advanced to the Flight B final with an 8-6 win over the Hokie team of Luka Somen and Eduardo Pinto.

Play concludes on Sunday with action at the Snyder Tennis Center beginning at 9 a.m.
