CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Virginia men’s tennis team opened play at its second home tournament of the fall, the inaugural UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational, on Friday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers had a strong performance on day one, with four singles players and three doubles teams advancing.

In singles, three seeded players advanced to the flight quarterfinals with a win on Friday after a first round bye. Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.), a 5-8 seed in Flight A-1, downed Alain Michel of Duke 6-2, 6-3 to advance. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India), a 5-8 seed in Flight A-2, topped Oscar Podlowski of Elon 6-3, 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals. Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.), also a 5-8 seed in A-2, topped Jason Pinksy of Duke 6-4, 6-2.

One unseeded Cavalier also reached the quarterfinals. Freshman Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) defeated Bryan Schwartz of Tennessee 6-3, 6-1 in the first round before upsetting No. 67 ranked David Bendheim of Nebraska 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round to advance to the A-1 quarterfinals.

In doubles, the Cavaliers had a team advance to the semifinals in each of the three flights. In A-1, No. 33 ranked Barrick and Singh scored a 8-4 win over the team of Gilner and McNaughton of USC. Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Courtney topped Bendheim and Stahmer of Nebraska 8-3 to reach the semifinals in A-2. Shabaz and Dominic Inglot (London, England), ranked No. 31 nationally, topped Brewer and wartz of Tennessee 8-2 in Flight A-3.

Play continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. The tournament is scheduled to be player outdoors at the Snyder Tennis Center, but inclement weather could move it indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club as it was on Friday. Admission is free.
