CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Virginia men’s tennis team had a strong second day at the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) each upset the top seed in their respective singles flight to advance to Sunday’s finals to highlight the day for the Cavaliers.

Shabaz, a 5-8 seed in Flight A-1, scored an upset of the top seed in the flight, 2008 NCAA Runner-Up J.P. Smith of Tennessee, with a 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 quarterfinal victory. Later in the day he topped teammate Drew Courtney 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Courtney had upset No.5-8 seed Nicolas Delgado of Virginia Tech, 6-2, 7-5.

Singh, a 5-8 seed in Flight A-2, topped No. 1 seed Austen Childs of Louisville 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. He followed up that win with a victory over Tennessee’s Boris Conkic in the semifinals.

In doubles, two Cavalier teams advanced to flight finals. Singh and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) topped Seleznev and Fanselow of Old Dominion 8-4 in the semifinal of Flight A-1. In Flight A-3, Shabaz and Dominic Inglot (London, England) topped Sacks and Nguyen of USC to reach the final.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday, likely indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club due to inclement weather. Play begins at 9 a.m. and admission is free.
