Richmond, VA The Virginia men’s golf team is tied for second place after 36 holes of play at the 15-team VCU Shootout being held at Hermitage Country Club in Richmond. The Cavaliers had rounds of even-par 284 and 9-under 275 to finish the first day of play at 9-under 559. Virginia Tech is tied with the Cavaliers on the leaderboard.

Wake Forest takes a commanding lead into Tuesday’s final round. The Deacons shot 26-under 542 and were the only team to post a better single-round score than UVa. Wake Forest had rounds of 273 and 269.

During the second round, four of UVa’s five players shot below par. The Cavaliers only had to count one score above par during the opening 36 holes of play.

Virginia was led by sophomore Amory Davis who shot 71, and a career-best 5-under 66, during Monday’s afternoon round. His previous best single-round score was a 71. Davis had five birdies and 13 pars during his second round. Davis enters the final round in seventh place.

Sophomore Will Collins is 18th at 1-under 141 after carding rounds of 71 and 70. Freshman Ben Kohles is 25th at 142 including rounds of 73 and 69. It marks the second straight tournament Kohles has posted a round in the 60s. Kyle Stough is tied with Kohles after opening with a 69 and shooting 73 during the second round. Steven Rojas is in 32nd place at 142. He had rounds of 73 and 70. Freshman Bruce Woodall, playing as a non-scorer, is 47th at 146. He posted scores of 71 and 75.

Wichita State’s Dustin Garza and Wake Forest’s Brendan Gielow lead the field at 10-under 132. Gielow posted a 7-under 64 during the second round.

The final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday. Live scoring is on-line at Golfstat.com.
