Meyer Breaks School Record in Long Jump at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. On his final jump of the day, freshman Matt Meyer (Suhlendorf, Germany) broke Virginia’s all-time record in the long jump to lead the Virginia track and field teams on the final day of the Virginia Tech Invitational in Rector Field House. Meyer’s jump of 24’ 8.25” meets an NCAA provisional mark and placed him second at the meet, in addition to bettering a mark of 24’ 7.25” previously leaped by Marion Mason (2001) and Tiki Barber (1992).
Sophomores Andrew Revelle (Clarksville, Md.) and Andrew Mearns (Williamsburg, Va.) opened events on the track for the Cavaliers, taking the top two spots in the mile run. Revelle completed the race in 4:18.39 for first, while Mearns finished in a close second, with a time of 4:18.79.
In field events, sophomore Rashawnda James (Charlottesville, Va.) won a close battle in the long jump, jumping 18’ 6.5”, while junior Ayla Smith (Winchester, Va.) missed second place by less than an inch, with an 18’ 2.5” mark, good for fourth place.
Senior Alex Bowman (Richmond, Va.) ran another close race for Virginia as he finished the 1000m run with the same time as Tennessee’s Michael Brodsky, but took second as Brodsky edged Bowman across the line.
In the 3000m, sophomores Emil Heineking (Chardon, Ohio) and Ryan Collins (Mansfield, Mass.), racing in their first collegiate indoor races, were close to NCAA provisional marks, with Heineking finishing second in 8:15.55 and Collins taking third in 8:18.71. Heineking’s time places him eighth on Virginia’s all-time top-10 records list.
Sophomore Kristina Chapman (Hampton, Va.) and freshman Jennifer Weatherly (Sterling, Va.) had a pair of personal-best performances in the 200m, while sophomore Meikle Paschal (Lexington, Mass.) also put in his best performance. Chapman finished third in 25.50, while Weatherly finished sixth in 25.76. Paschal won his heat in 22.12 and finished third overall. His time bumped him into Virginia’s all-time record book at 10th in the 200m.
Freshman Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.), competing in her first collegiate shot put event, also made her way into Virginia’s all-time record books, throwing 44’ 2.75” to mark the ninth best in program history, and placed her third at the meet.
In the 3000m, junior Samantha Stafford (Charlottesville, Va.) finished second in 10:17.13.
The Cavaliers will return to Blacksburg, Va., next weekend to compete in the Virginia Tech Challenge. Events will begin on Friday and conclude Saturday.
