GREENSBORO, N.C. Virginia freshman guard Sylven Landesberg (Flushing, N.Y.) is the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for the fifth time this season. Landesberg was honored Monday (Jan. 12) for his play in Virginia’s games against Brown and Virginia Tech last week.

Landesberg scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds in Virginia’s games against Brown and Virginia Tech. That included a 20-point effort in the Cavaliers’ 78-75 loss at Virginia Tech. Landesberg was 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from the field vs. the Hokies and made all six of his free throw attempts.

With the honor, Landesberg becomes the fourth Cavalier in history win to the award at least five times in a season. Bryant Stith won the award six times in 1988-89, Ralph Sampson won it five times in 1979-80 and Sean Singletary won it five times in 2004-05.

For the season, Landesberg ranks fourth in the ACC in scoring at 18.5 points per game. He has scored in double figures in 11 of the Cavaliers’ 13 games this season, including eight 20-point games.

Wake Forest’s Jeff Teague was named the ACC Player of the Week.

Virginia returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 15) when it hosts No. 5 North Carolina at John Paul Jones Arena. Game time is 9 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
