CHARLOTTESVILLE Virginia freshman Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) was named the ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week conference officials announced Tuesday. Courtney was instrumental to the Cavaliers winning the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championship last week in Chicago.

Courtney went 4-0 in singles at the No. 6 position on the week as Virginia (12-0) defeated No. 12 Tulsa 4-0, No. 4 UCLA 4-3, No. 8 Tennessee 4-0 and No. 3 Georgia 4-1 to win its second consecutive ITA National Team Indoor title. In Monday’s final against Georgia, Courtney rallied for a 0-6, 6-0, 7-5 win over Josh Varela to clinch the championship for the Cavaliers. In doubles, Courtney was 2-1 at the No. 3 position with Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.).

The award is the first of Courtney’s career and the third for a Cavalier this season. Dominic Inglot (London, England) was named ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 27 and Feb. 10.

The Cavaliers return to action on Saturday as they host a pair of matches at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia will play Boise State at noon and Boston College at 6 p.m. The matches are part of a tennis quadruple-header as the women’s team hosts Marshall at 9 a.m. and Richmond at 3 p.m.
