CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia softball team (6-4) continues tournament play this weekend at South Carolina’s Gamecock Invitational. The Cavaliers will begin the event Friday with a 9 a.m. contest against Troy (7-3) before playing Eastern Illinois (5-0) at 1 p.m.

UVa will then battle North Florida (3-9) at 7 p.m. Saturday before closing tournament play at 9 a.m. Sunday against Sacred Heart (0-0).

The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-3 weekend at UNLV’s Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. After dropping an 8-0 decision to Brigham Young, Virginia came back to knock off Southern Utah (3-0), Saint Louis (11-0) and South Dakota State (13-0). Senior pitcher Karla Wilburn threw Virginia’s first no-hitter in three seasons against the Billikens.

Virginia wrapped up the tournament with two hard-fought, one-run losses. Cal-Fullerton came away with a 1-0 win before Louisville escaped in extra innings, 6-5.

Nicole Koren continues to lead the Cavaliers at the plate. Koren hit three home runs last weekend, bringing her total to four on the year. She also paces Virginia with a .481 batting average, 13 hits and is tied with Giannina Cipolloni with 12 RBI. Sarah Tacke is hitting .300 while Cipolloni has a .286 average.

Wilburn improved her record to 5-1 on the year with three wins last weekend. Wilburn’s 1.26 paces the Virginia pitching staff, as do her 28 strikeouts.
