CHARLOTTESVILLEThe Virginia men’s basketball team will be looking for its third consecutive victory on Saturday (Feb. 21) when the Cavaliers play an Atlantic Coast Conference game at NC State.

Virginia enters the game with an overall record of 9-13 and a 3-8 record in the ACC after a 75-61 victory over Virginia Tech at John Paul Jones Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 18). The win was the second in a row for the Cavaliers. UVa defeated Clemson 85-81 in overtime on Sunday (Feb. 15) at JPJA.

Freshman Sylven Landesberg scored 19 points, had nine rebounds and six assists to lead Virginia to the victory over Virginia Tech. Three other UVa players scored in double figures as junior forward Jamil Tucker had 13 points and nine rebounds, and junior guard Calvin Baker and sophomore forward Mike Scott each scored 10 points. Freshman guard Sammy Zeglinski had six assists for the Cavaliers.

Landesberg is averaging 18.0 points a game to lead Virginia in that department and he ranks seventh in the ACC in scoring. He is also averaging 6.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 33.8 minutes played a game, and is shooting 82.9 percent (121-146) from the free throw line. Landesberg ranks fifth in the conference in minutes played, and ninth in free throw percentage. He leads ACC freshmen in scoring and minutes played, and ranks third among conference freshmen in rebounding and assists.

Scott is the only other Virginia player averaging in double figures in scoring. He is averaging 10.7 points a game and leads the team in rebounding with an average of 7.6 rebounds a game. Scott is shooting 55.2 percent (91-165) from the field. He ranks second in the ACC in offensive rebounds with an average of 3.6 a game and ranks ninth in overall rebounding in the conference.

Zeglinski is averaging 9.4 points a game and ranks seventh in the ACC in assists with an average of 3.6 a game. Tucker is averaging 8.0 points a game and Baker is averaging 7.6 points and 2.5 assists a game.

Freshman center Assane Sene is averaging 5.2 rebounds a game and ranks fourth in the ACC in blocked shots with an average of 1.7 a game.

Sophomore guard Jeff Jones has started the last four games for Virginia and is averaging 11.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 29.6 minutes played a game in the last five games.

NC State enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 14-10 and a 4-7 record in the ACC. The Wolfpack lost 89-80 at North Carolina on Wednesday (Feb. 18).

Junior forward Brandon Costner leads NC State in scoring with an average of 14.9 points a game. Also averaging in double figures in scoring for the Wolfpack are senior center/forward Ben McCauley (12.5 ppg.) and senior guard/forward Courtney Fells (12.0 ppg.). McCauley leads NC State in rebounding with an average of 7.8 rebounds a game.

Sidney Lowe is in his third season as head coach at NC State.

NC State leads the series with Virginia 79-54 and the Wolfpack leads 50-18 in games played in Raleigh. Saturday’s game is the only regular season meeting between the two teams this year. Last season, the Cavaliers won the only meeting between the two teams 78-60 at John Paul Jones Arena.

After Saturday’s game at NC State, the Cavaliers return to action on Thursday (Feb. 26) against Miami at John Paul Jones Arena. That game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and will be televised by Raycom.
