Kim Lewellen Signs New Contract as UVa Women's Golf Coach

Charlottesville, VA The Virginia Athletics Department announced Friday that the University and head women’s golf coach Kim Lewellen have agreed to an extension of her contract through January of 2014.

“Kim Lewellen has established herself as one of the country’s best golf coaches and teachers,” said Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage. “ I can’t think of a coach that is a better fit for UVa. In the two seasons she’s coached our team, we’ve been consistently ranked among the best programs in the nation. I look forward to the work she’ll do with our golfers in the coming years.”

Currently in her second year at Virginia, Lewellen’s team stands No. 4 in the latest Golfweek poll, the highest ranking in the program’s history. The Cavaliers open the spring portion of their 2008-09 schedule March 13-15 at LSU.

“I am grateful for this extension,” Lewellen said. “This has been a wonderful experience for myself and our family and I am very proud to be part of Virginia’s exceptional athletics program. Along with my team, I am looking forward to building on the past traditions and current success Virginia golf is enjoying.”

Last season Lewellen was tabbed as the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Virginia to a second-place finish at the conference tournament championship. The Cavaliers went on to place 12th at the NCAA Championships, the best finish in the program’s history. That same season the team posted the highest grade point average of any of UVa’s athletic programs.

Before joining the UVa staff, Lewellen was the head coach at East Carolina for two seasons and served as both the head men’s and women’s coach at The Citadel for the 2003-04 season. A 1993 North Carolina graduate, she earned All-ACC accolades as a junior and senior, was a first-team All-American in 1993 and was named to the ACC’s 50th Anniversary Women’s Golf Team.
