Women's Tennis Tops Marshall and Richmond

CHARLOTTESVILLE The No. 29 Virginia women’s tennis team swept a pair of matches Saturday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers scored a 5-2 victory over No. 54 Marshall in the morning and followed that with a 7-0 win over No. 75 Richmond in the afternoon.
The Cavaliers (6-2) opened the day by defeating Marshall 5-2. Virginia opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) won at No. 1 doubles, Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) won at No. 2 doubles and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) won at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Cavaliers quickly took a 3-0 lead as Rales and Stevens posted straight set wins at No. 4 and No. 3 respectively. Virginia clinched the match at No. 1, where Fraser was playing for the first time this season. She topped No. 90 Kellie Schmitt 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 to make the score. 4-0. Vaez later added a three-set win at No. 6 singles.
In their second match of the day, Virginia topped No. 75 Richmond 7-0. The Cavaliers once again swept the doubles matches. The teams of Stevens and Fraser and Rales and Vaez each won their second match of the day, while Hardenbergh teamed with Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, Tenn.), making her spring debut, for the win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, the Cavaliers swept all six matches, including four in straight sets. Fraser (No. 1 singles), Rales (No. 4), Stevens (No. 3) and Bartlett (No. 6) each won in straight sets to make the score 5-0. Vaez added a three-set win at No. 5 and Hardenbergh completed the sweep with a three-set win at No. 2.
The Cavaliers return to action on Friday, February 27 as they open ACC play at Maryland.
