Wrestling Loses at Maryland, 25-15

CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. The Virginia wrestling team lost its regular-season finale to Maryland Sunday, 25-15, in College Park, Md. The Cavaliers won four weight classes, highlighted by a Rocco Caponi (Sr., Uniontown, Ohio) pin of Chris Lloyd at 184 pounds. Caponi needed just 1:01 to finish off Lloyd.
Virginia (11-11, 2-3 ACC) started off in a quick 10-0 hole, rallied to take a 17-15 but then lost by major decisions in the final three classes for the 25-15 final score.
The Cavaliers forfeited at 133 pounds after starter Matt Bonson (Fr., Lewistown, Pa.) suffered an injury in practice Friday. Maryland (10-8-1, 3-2) racked up four points when No. 9 Alex Krom won by major decision over No. 16 Nick Nelson (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.).
UVa scored consecutive wins at 149 and 157. Peter Ferrara (Sr., Doylestown, Pa.) won 8-4 over Maryland’s Steve Fehnel before Jedd Moore (Fr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) staved off a late takedown attempt by Kyle John to win, 6-5.
After a Maryland win at 165 pounds, the Cavaliers rebounded at 174 and 184. No. 7 Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) ran his record to 34-1 with a 3-0 decision over Corey Peltier. Henrich now is in a tie with John Matyiko (1998-99) for the ninth-most wins in a single season in Virginia history.
Caponi followed with his 24th career fall, giving Virginia a 15-13 lead in the dual. Caponi’s career pins total is tied for fifth-most in Virginia history with Jim Harshaw (1996-99). Caponi now has 107 career wins third all-time at Virginia.
Maryland rallied to win the final three weight classes each by major decision to earn the 25-15 final score.
Virginia is off next weekend before competing in the ACC Championships March 7 in Blacksburg.
