CHARLOTTESVILLE — The Virginia women’s tennis team will travel to Durham, N.C. this weekend for a NCAA Regional at the Ambler Tennis Stadium on the campus of Duke University. The Cavaliers will meet VCU in a first round match Friday at 11 a.m. The host Blue Devils will play Richmond at 2 p.m. in the other first round match and Friday’s winners will play at noon on Saturday for the right to go to College Station, Texas the following week for the NCAA Round of 16.

The Cavaliers are making their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance. In each of Virginia’s last three NCAA appearances, the Cavaliers have reached the second round. In 2007, Virginia also met VCU in the first round, scoring a 4-2 victory in Clemson, S.C. UVa fell to the host Tigers 4-1 in the second round. Virginia also went to Duke in 2006, topping Alabama 4-3 in the first round before suffering a 4-0 loss to Blue Devils. In 2003, Virginia downed Ohio State 4-0 in the opening round of a regional in Knoxville, Tenn., but fell to Tennessee 4-1 in the second round.

Virginia enters the tournament with a 13-9 record and a No. 27 national ranking. VCU is 18-9 this season and with a No. 45 national ranking, the lowest ranked team to recieve an at-large selection to the field of 64. The only previous NCAA meeting between the schools was the Cavaliers’ 4-2 win over the Rams in the first round of the 2007 tournament in Clemson.
