High School Football Championships Return to Scott Stadium
CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia High School League (VHSL) 2009 and 2010 Group AAA Allstate/VHSL Football Championships will be played at the University of Virginia’s Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. The 2009 Division 5 and 6 football finals will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009. The Division 5 game is tentatively scheduled to begin at noon, and the Division 6 game at 4:30 p.m.
“Last year’s games at Virginia Tech afforded an exciting and first-class experience for all participants, and we are thrilled to be returning to UVa for the next two years. We are confident that fans of high school football will again have an ideal setting for their championships,” said VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley.
“We want our student athletes to play in a big-time atmosphere and have an outstanding championship experience. We know that playing at UVa’s Scott Stadium will provide that experience, not only for the players and coaches, but for all fans attending the finals.”
“There are numerous options state wide where the Virginia High School League could stage its football championship,” said University of Virginia Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage. “We’re pleased that the University of Virginia and Charlottesville are once again the choice to partner with the VHSL. Our central location, quality facilities, and excellent staffing mean the games will get our best efforts, making the contests memorable for participants and fans alike.”
The VHSL Executive Committee voted 24-0 today to approve UVa’s bid to host the Division 5 and 6 Group AAA football games at Scott Stadium in 2009 and 2010.
“We had a great experience here in 2007 when Virginia hosted our Division 5 and 6 championship games. As it has the last two years, a venue such as Scott Stadium will allow us to maintain the doubleheader format and to provide live statewide telecasts of both games.”
Also approved by the Executive Committee was Liberty University to host the Division 3 and 4 Group AA football championships and the Division 1 and 2 Group A football championships in Salem for 2009 and 2010.
