Charlottesville, VA The Virginia men’s golf team begins play at the NCAA East Regional Championship Thursday at Galloway Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. The Cavaliers are seeded ninth in the 14-team field. The top five finishers from the three-day, 54-hole tournament, will advance to the NCAA Championships. The NCAA is using a new regional format this year that features six regional championships taking place starting Thursday.

The field for the East Regional includes (listed by seed): Clemson, Alabama, Illinois, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Colorado State, Kent State, Coastal Carolina, Virginia, Penn State, Minnesota, VCU, Columbia and Sacred Heart.

Virginia’s lineup will include senior Conrad Von Borsig, junior Kyle Stough, sophomore Will Collins and freshmen Ben Kohles and Bruce Woodall. Von Borsig, Stough and Collins all played in the NCAA East Regional last year, helping the Cavaliers to a 10th-place finish and berth into the NCAA Championships.

The Cavaliers are paired with Kent State and Coastal Carolina for the first-round of play. Virginia tees off starting at 9:20 a.m. UVa is currently ranked No. 51 by Golfstat and No. 52 by Golfweek.

The 2009 NCAA East Regional marks the 13th time the Cavaliers have earned to bid to a regional site. Virginia finished 10th last year, beating out Michigan State by two strokes for the final berth from the site to the NCAA Championships. UVa was 26th at last year’s NCAA Championships. It marked the 11th time the Cavaliers have advanced to the national tournament.
