Newton, NC — Tuesday Virginia redshirt freshman Eleana Collins (Pinehurst, N.C.) fired a 2-under par 70 to win the 83rd Women’s Carolinas Amateur Championship by one stroke at 217. She shot 74 in the first round and 73 over the second 18 holes. She beat out defending champion Abby Bools (East Carolina) of Hickory, NC. Collins is no stranger to WCGA Championships. In 2006 she won the Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship by a 3 & 1 margin over Kristen Vincent.

Collins started her round strong making a birdie on the first hole of the day.

“I kept my cool out there and didn’t get to high when I made something good happen nor did I get to low when something bad happened,” Collins said. “The only time I got really nervous was after the 16th hole when Abby (Bools) made a birdie on 17 and I was only one ahead heading into the final hole. I just told myself to stay focused and stay steady.”

Both players made a par and Collins found herself holding the trophy.

All players were placed into flights for the final round. This championship is open to women of all ages who are residents of North or South Carolina. This championship was conducted by the Women’s Carolinas Golf Association (WCGA)
