Briggs Wins ECAC Javelin Title
PRINCETON, N.J. Junior Meghan Briggs closed competition for the Virginia track and field teams at the 2009 ECAC/IC4A Championships on Sunday by winning the ECAC javelin title at William Weaver Track & Field Stadium.
Briggs led all competitors with a mark of 162’ 4”, while freshman Tara Karin finished ninth in the event, throwing 139’ 6”.
In the shot put, freshman Maureen Laffan finished fourth with an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 47’ 10” to extend her season and claim the program’s all-time fifth longest throw. Senior Alexa Manning also competed in the event, throwing 45’ 7.75” and finishing sixth.
In the 400m hurdle finals, sophomore Chidi Uche finished sixth in 1:00.53.
Competing without all of it’s distance runners, the Cavalier women finished second overall for third-consecutive year, earning 58 points, while the men finished 16th with 19 points.
The University of Connecticut’s women won the ECAC Championship with 74 points, while West Virginia finished third with 46.25. On the men’s side, the University of Albany won the IC4A Title with 68 points, with Liberty finishing second with 56 points and Rutgers earning third with 55 points.
Virginia’s distance runners will compete this evening in the distance carnival portion of the Tar Heel & Aggie Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. Events will begin at Fetzer Field/Belk Track at 8 p.m., with the last event toeing the line at 9:45 p.m.
