CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia track and field distance runners competed Sunday evening in the distance carnival section of the Tar Heel & Aggie Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. Freshman Sintayehu Taye won the 1500m, while sophomore Emil Heineking and junior Graham Tribble each qualified for regionals in the 5000m.

Taye clocked in at 3:47.50 in the 1500m, to win the event, while senior Alex Bowman finished sixth in 3:50.37. Sophomore Ryan Collins ran 3:51.86 in the event and freshman Lance Roller finished in 3:54.07. Sophomore Andrew Lobb crossed the line in 4:06.90.

In the 5000m, Heineking finished second in 14:03.79 the program’s sixth-best performance of all time, while Tribble took fifth in 14:07.30 the 10th-best time in Virginia’s history.

In the 800m, freshman Morgane Gay finished second in 2:08.29 the program’s seventh-best time and junior Lyndsay Harper took fifth in 2:10.95. Sophomore Ariane Sloan finished eighth in 2:12.98 and Jen Hovland put in a time of 2:18.93.

The Cavaliers will take next weekend off to prepare for the 2009 NCAA East Regionals on May 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C.
