COLLEGE STATION, Texas The Virginia men’s tennis team will begin play at the 2009 NCAA Individual Championships on Wednesday at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Cavaliers have three players competing in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship and two doubles teams competing in the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship.

The singles tournament begins on Wednesday. Dominic Inglot (London, England) is a No. 9-16 seed and will open play against Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine. It is the second consecutive NCAA Singles Championship appearance for Inglot.

Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) is making his first NCAA Singles Championship appearance and will play Christoph Mller of Rice in the first round.

Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) is also making his NCAA Singles Championship debut this season. He will meet Rudolf Siwy of Fresno State in the first round.

The doubles tournament is scheduled to begin on Thursday and both Cavalier teams are making their first appearance in the event. This season marks the first time Virginia has had multiple teams selected for the tournament.

The team of Inglot and Shabaz drew the No. 1 seed, Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge of Ole Miss in the first round. The team of Singh and Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) will play No. 4 seed Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt in the first round. Earlier this season, Barrick and Singh topped Schnugg and Hunt 9-8 (2) to clinch the doubles point for Virginia when they played Georgia in the final of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February.

Both tournaments will conclude with the finals on Monday, May 25.
