CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia wrestlers have been selected to the 2008-09 All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team, announced today by the conference office. Cavaliers Rocco Caponi (Sr., Uniontown, Ohio), Calvin Cardillo (Jr., Alexandria, Va.) and Peter Ferrara (Sr., Doylestown, Pa.) each gleaned the award.

Caponi, who is finishing a master’s degree in education, concluded his Virginia career with a 17-7 mark this season. He won his third-consecutive ACC title at 184 pounds and made his fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships while finishing his career with a 111-33 record. He ranks third in career wins and fifth in career falls (24) at Virginia.

Cardillo, a history major, went 8-16 this past season while competing at heavyweight.

Ferrara, who recently graduated with a degree in kinesiology, posted a 17-10 record this season at 149 pounds. Ferrara also was named one of 10 national male finalists for the 2009 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. 

He is slated to attend medical school this fall.

Duke junior heavyweight John Barone was named ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
