CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Lauren Dickson and sophomore Simone Asque led the Virginia volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-14) sweep of NC Central Friday afternoon in the Cavaliers’ opening match of the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup. Dickson and Asque both put up career-best numbers as Virginia improved its record to 2-2 on the season. NC Central fell to 1-4.

Dickson led the team with a match-high 16 kills to go with a career-best .557 attack percentage, while Asque hit a personal-best .647 and landed 12 kills. From the right side, freshman Tobi Farrar kept Virginia’s efficiency high, hitting .714 for the match, knocking down five kills on seven attempts.

For the match, the Cavaliers’ offense hit .375, while the defense, led by junior AJ Cushman’s 14 digs, held the Eagles to a .026 clip.

Freshman Rachel Gray led all players with 35 assists.

For NC Central, Shantel Moore had a team-high five kills and six digs, while Avaniki Campbell collected a team-best four blocks and six digs.

In the first set, Virginia jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead, forcing NC Central to call a time out. The Cavaliers then extended their lead to 13, enabling them to cruise to a 25-12 victory.

The second set progressed similarly to the first, with the Cavaliers riding a 7-0 run to go up 9-2. Virginia ended strong with three straight kills, taking the set 25-13.

The third set mirrored the first two with Virginia leading by as many as 12. Capitalizing on a 5-0 run, sparked by a Simone Asque kill, the Cavaliers won the final frame 25-14.

Virginia will be back in action this evening, facing in-state rival Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium.
