Dayton Beach, FL – Seventh-seeded Virginia upset No. 2 seed South Carolina to open the second day of competition at the National Golf Coaches Association’s Match Play Championships. The Cavaliers then tied Auburn in Monday afternoon’s semifinals, but lost the tiebreaker to drop into the third-place match Tuesday.

The Cavaliers downed the Gamecocks 2-1-1. Whitney Neuhauser (1 up) and Calle Nielson (2 and 1) both picked up wins for UVa while Brittany Altomare and Eleana Collins halved their matches. Meredith Swanson picked up South Carolina’s only victory, downing Nicole Agnello 5 and 3.

In the afternoon, after trailing late in the match, the Cavaliers rallied to tie No. 3 seed Auburn 2-2-1. The Tigers advanced to Tuesday’s championship against LSU by virtue of winning more holes (5 to 3) against the Cavaliers.

Nielson (2 up) and Agnello (1 up) provided the victories for UVa while Altomare tied the Tigers’ Cydney Clanton. Neuhauser (2 and 1) and Joy Kim (3 and 1) dropped their matches.

The Cavaliers will face Florida, the winner of the medal bracket, consisting of the teams that finished ninth through 16th in Sunday’s 36 holes of stroke play, for third place Tuesday.
