Franklin, TN – The No. 9 Virginia women’s golf team opened the first round of play at Vanderbilt’s Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate by shooting 4-over 292. The Cavaliers are in 14th place in the 17-team field that includes 12 teams ranked in the current National Golf Coaches Association poll.
Virginia was led in the first round by Whitney Neuhauser who shot 2-under 70 to tie for 15th place. Wet conditions on the course, caused by the heavy rains that impacted the area earlier in the week, provided soft greens and clean and lift conditions for the players. Nicole Agnello carded a 73 and is in 45th place while Eleana Collins shot 74 and stands 57th. Brittany Altomare posted a 75 and is 72nd while Calle Nielson shot 78 and is in 82nd place.
Auburn and USC share the opening round lead at 10-under 278, a new first-round record score for the tournament. Alabama and 2009 NCAA Champion Arizona State are tied for third at 280.
USC’s Jennifer Song, the 2009 U.S. Amateur champion, and Auburn’s Candace Schepperle lead the stroke play at 6-under 66.
The second round of the tournament is set for Saturday and the final round will be played Sunday.
