CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team opened play at the second annual UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational Friday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club as rain moved the event indoors. The Cavaliers had 10 players advance in singles at the event, which features 31 nationally ranked players.

In the A-1 draw, No. 3 seed Houston Barrick (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) advanced to the quarterfinals with straight set wins. Top-seeded Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) and Steven Eelkman Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) both cruised to convincing victories in the first round of the A-2 flight. No. 3 seed Lee Singer (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) advanced in the A-3 flight with first round wins. In Flight A-4, three Cavaliers, top-seeded Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.), Santiago Villegas (Bogota, Colombia) and Milo Johnson (Tulsa, Okla.) all won in the first round. First-year Dino Dell’Orto (Hong Kong, China) won his first round match in the B singles flight.

In the doubles quarterfinals on Friday, a Cavalier team advanced to the semifinals in three of the four draws. Johnson and Villegas won in Flight A-1, Shabaz and Jenkins won in Flight A-3, and Courtney and Singer won in Flight A-4.

Play continues on Saturday at 8 a.m. Matches will be played outdoors at the Snyder Tennis Center (weather permitting). Saturday’s schedule consists of two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
